Equity and Inclusion

Diversity is in our DNA

Since our inception, diversity, equity, and inclusion have been core values at the heart of our ethos and identity. We are an institution that celebrates diversity of demographics, perspectives, and experiences. Worcester Academy attracts students from:

  • 2o Countries
  • 17 States
  • 88 Towns and Cities across Massachusetts

A Legacy Of Inclusivity

At times in our history when most college preparatory schools were uninterested in the diversity of their student bodies, Worcester Academy distinguished itself by welcoming students of all cultural, racial, religious, and financial backgrounds.

  • First international students graduated in the 1880s
  • First African-American, who was a freed slave, graduated in 1875
  • Financial aid first awarded in the year of the school’s founding

A focus on belonging and exposure to diverse lived experiences creates bridges of connectivity across individuals, groups and communities.

Commitment to Equity and Inclusion

At Worcester Academy, we cherish the individual and collective diversity of identities, backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives within our school community. Every person matters here, and we're committed to upholding their dignity and worth in everything we do.

Acknowledging the historical systemic barriers that many in our community face, we actively embrace and support lived experiences by creating inclusive learning spaces in and beyond the classroom.

We are committed to:
  • Leading with empathy and making equitable and honorable choices at every turn.
  • Holding ourselves accountable for promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion as inherent values that can be seen and felt across all institutional touchpoints.
  • Fostering cross-cultural openness, humility, compassion, and respect as prerequisites for effective global citizenship.
  • Eliminating oppressive language and practices that target any identity or lived experience.
  • Continuously engaging in conversations and practices that prioritize thoughtful, supportive engagement of the lived experiences of all individuals.

Worcester Academy has a reputation of being a place where students of all backgrounds can not just attend, but are given the wings to thrive.

DEI in Action

Our students participate in national and regional DEI-focused conferences and workshops.

Worcester Academy is proud to support and participate in the AISNE diversity practitioners programs and events, and is a past host of the High School Students of Color Conference.

Affinity Groups

Our affinity groups are active, dynamic hubs where students of particular self-identified affinities can safely come together to bond, exchange ideas, support one another, promote inclusivity, and organize community events.
