Harnessing The Magic Of Music

Music is a universal language that connects across cultures, conveys raw emotion, and transcends time. From classic instrumental to modern music technology, Worcester Academy students delve deeply into music literacy, appreciation, composition, and performance.

Whether taking courses in the school day or using extracurricular time to pursue their passions, students can access an abundance of opportunities to play and sing in ensembles, in clubs, at school concerts, and seasonal events.

Middle School Music

Middle School students are introduced to a breadth of musical styles, genres, and applications. They learn to experience music as both auditors and creators, reflecting on every piece with richer understanding and appreciation. Using software like Soundtrap, they even experiment in composition, producing original music and media through our digital sound studio.

Sixth- and seventh-graders choose from a range of instruments to play in ensembles and sing in the chorus, with both groups performing together in at least one concert every semester.

Those drawn to the spotlight can find stages to shine as soloists. Having experienced every outlet of our music program, eighth-graders focus on refining expertise in chosen areas and join the Upper School instrumental or choral ensemble. Through regular rehearsals and performances, they develop a deeper understanding of the ensemble process and build confidence on stage.

Upper School Music

Upper School students further their musicianship through ensembles, specialized studies, music technology, and creative composing. Small group and advanced studies like Chamber Music foster independence and leadership, challenging students at every level to enhance their skills through collaborative and solo performances.

Instrumental students play in the Ensemble Club, in the Pit Orchestra for our all-school musical, for the Basketball Pep Band, in Jazz Band, or in Contemporary Band club.

Vocalists focus on technique, interpretation, and improvisation within a harmonic framework, and are given an active voice in determining the nature of group projects, solos, and small group pieces. Singers rehearse in Chorus and perform at concerts and events for the community throughout the year. They are also encouraged to audition for The Academy Singers and the District Choir Ensemble.

Music Studies offers private focused time for students to hone their craft through individualized instrumental or vocal lessons.

Spotlight: Central Mass District Choir And Instrumental Ensemble

Each year, students at Worcester Academy are given the opportunity to audition for the Central Massachusetts Junior & Senior Districts ensembles. They can choose to audition for Band, Choir, Orchestra, or Jazz Band. Once selected, these students join hundreds of other musicians from around Central Massachusetts to rehearse and perform.

Our music students are empowered to take on leadership in small group settings. If a student has the desire and drive to launch their own musical endeavor, we’re here to support them in that.
