I think that if it weren't for Worcester Academy, I would never be able to really call myself an artist.

Unleashing Creativity Through Art

Worcester Academy’s Visual Arts program provides the perfect canvas for students to discover new passions, express their creative vision, and push the boundaries of their artistic potential.

As they self-reflect and refine their craft, students develop critical thinking skills and cultivate a lifelong appreciation for the arts.

Along with showcasing their art on campus, Worcester Academy students have the opportunity to display their work at the world-class Worcester Art Museum.

Middle School Visual Arts

Middle Schoolers are encouraged to explore as many mediums as possible, building a well-rounded repertoire that can include painting, drawing, graphic design, sculpting, ceramics, mixed media, digital photography, and more, with offerings changing each year. Drawing inspiration from field trips and our city’s public art, students explore personal identity using a variety of hands-on media and techniques.

As they stretch the bounds of their creativity, they learn to gracefully give and receive constructive feedback, collaborate with fellow artists, and utilize artistic problem solving to overcome challenges.

Project-based work includes taking inspiration from different cultural touchstones and expressing it in a designated medium. Student works are showcased on Middle School Arts Night, in Walker Gallery, and throughout our halls, giving our young artists many opportunities to be seen and celebrated.

Upper School Visual Arts

Upper School students dive deeper into the vibrant world of visual arts, mastering mediums like graphic design, ceramics, sculpture, drawing, digital photography, architecture, and painting. For deeper engagement, students can join Art Club or attend Open Studio. Advanced students have the opportunity to refine their skills further in an honors studio art class.

Spotlight: Open Studio

Open Studio is an after school space for students to practice their visual art as an outlet under the guidance of faculty mentors. Students are free to sculpt clay on the pottery wheel, use Procreate to sketch a vivid scene on the iPad, work on a painting, and even develop projects for their academic art classes.

Under the guidance of our visual art teachers, students work collaboratively or independently to create their own artwork or passion project.
