Theater

Fostering Creative Expression And Collaboration

At Worcester Academy, masterful storytelling, self-expression and collaboration are the driving forces behind every theatrical endeavor.

Whether directing a prolific monologue, designing the lighting for a musical number, penning a pivotal story arc, or performing an action-packed improv scene, theater students are immersed in the collaborative spirit of the stage.

Students can sharpen and showcase their talents via classes and clubs, in large-scale musicals, plays, and festivals—experiences that not only grow their theatrical skills but also foster a deep sense of community and collective achievement.

As they practice taking bold risks both on stage and behind the scenes, students learn the importance of trusting their creative partners, how to be accountable for their role in the theatrical ecosystem, and how vital each individual is to the collective success of a production. In discovering their authentic voice and artistic expression, they become powerful communicators and confident individuals in every area of life.

Middle School Theater

Middle School students journey through the world of dramatic storytelling through mediums like acting, technical theater, design, and script writing.

Each grade level immerses students in unique theatrical experiences that culminate in captivating performances.

As they harken back to the ancient theater, sixth-graders are challenged to produce plays in the style of classical Greek mythology drama. Seventh-graders explore improvisational theater lessons in the style of Viola Spolin’s Second City before performing a final improv show. Eighth-graders dive into the world and works of William Shakespeare before writing, producing, and performing an original retelling of one of his plays.

Beyond the school day, students have the option to participate as cast or crew members for the fall all-school musical and the spring Middle School play. Through these experiences, they learn to self-express while building technical, critical thinking, and collaborative skills.

Upper School Theater

Upper School students dive deeper into every aspect of theater production, including writing, performing, directing, producing, costume design, lighting design, sound design, scenic design, and set construction. Taking dramatic works from conception to final performance prepares students to overcome challenges through creative problem-solving.

They learn to give and receive thoughtful feedback, collaborate with their peers, and sharpen their listening, communication, and leadership skills.

Putting skills into practice, they are challenged to produce and perform creative works, including improv shows, monologues, and fully realized productions for the Worcester Academy community. Beyond the school day, Upper Schoolers have the option to participate as cast or crew members in the fall All-School Musical, the Upper School Winter play, and the Upper School Spring Production.
