English
Approach
Our Middle School English program transforms students into effective lifelong communicators, readers, writers, and critical thinkers. With a focus on literature, writing, grammar, and vocabulary, students engage in class studies and independent reading, honing their skills through brainstorming, drafting, revising, and publishing their work.
Reading and writing instruction covers various genres and purposes, emphasizing creativity, self-reflection and expression. Literary analysis and class discussions enhance critical thinking, while a workshop model ensures individualized writing progress. Daily reading, compositions, book talks, and oral participation ensure comprehensive development in every student.
Application: S.T.O.R.Y. Talks
Eighth-grade S.T.O.R.Y. Talks give students the opportunity to explore a topic of personal importance to them—a year-long endeavor that culminates with each student standing center stage and delivering an oral “Ted Talk style” presentation for parents, teachers, and members of the Worcester Academy community.
This powerful framework empowers students to reflect deeply, strengthen public speaking skills, and harness the power of storytelling as a vehicle for persuasive communication and self-expression.
