History & Social Sciences
Approach
The Department of History and Social Sciences aims to create dynamic learners who passionately engage with the world through a challenging curriculum that fosters critical and creative thinking, and an appreciation for history's relevance in solving today’s challenges.
Engaging deeply in Social Studies, American History, and Global Studies, students develop their global citizenship through inquiry, collaboration, analysis, and communication.
Acting as historians, they engage in analytical writing, presentations, discussions, debates, and creative projects. By emphasizing student voice, independence, and empowerment, students become leaders who can successfully navigate our increasingly global world.
Application: Model United Nations Climate Summit
Eighth-graders culminated their interdisciplinary exploration of climate change by hosting a Model United Nations Climate Summit. Integrating scientific study with an examination of the history, climate, and the political policies of various countries, students proposed innovative solutions to mitigate climate change, balancing the needs of their populations with political and financial realities.
They also crafted resolutions that articulated shared challenges and outlined actionable steps to address them, demonstrating a deep understanding of global cooperation and problem-solving.
