Approach

Our Middle School science program sparks curiosity and a love for learning by providing a strong foundation in key scientific concepts. Students explore physical, life, and earth sciences progressively each year, adding complexity and deeper understanding with each revisit to a subject. An inquiry-based, experiential approach allows students to find meaning in their learning.

Assessments can include lab reports, projects, quizzes and in-class investigation and activities. Through both independent and collaborative work, students learn to observe, organize, and analyze data, think critically, and apply solutions in ways that connect classroom knowledge to real-world scenarios, enhancing their understanding of the world around them.

Application: Boat Building

Middle School engineering students were challenged to build a boat using only recycled materials that could carry 20 pennies across the Worcester Academy pool.

With a budget of just $10 in “Builder Bucks” and a schedule to meet, the project required them to devise a viable design, purchase their materials from the "store" of recycled materials, and build a boat that could successfully execute the task at hand.
